Sea Women Expeditions

The mission of Sea Women Expeditions is to scout, record and document disappearing sea ice in the Arctic. We create a space for women to gain leadership skills and field experience in ocean expeditions integrating the Arts & Sciences. Sea Women Expeditions is comprised of an international team of ocean scientists, explorers, movie-makers, photographers, artists, educators, cultural advisors, and medical and scuba diving professionals. Since 2014, Sea Women Expeditions has run four circumpolar expeditions to the Arctic, specifically to Nunatsiavut, Nunavut, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. More than 80 women, ages 16 to 78 years, have participated in these ocean research and dive & snorkel expeditions. In consultation with Inuit team members and advisors, our sea women have delivered an innovative ocean knowledge sharing and mobilization program — involving mobile aquariums that temporarily house sea critters, underwater robot-building workshops, and snorkel safaris — to more than 1,000 Inuit youths, girls and elders in Nunatsiavut, Nunavut and Greenland. Post COVID-19 pandemic, Sea Women Expeditions is gearing up to run ocean research and dive & snorkel expeditions in Nunavut, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Expedition dates and itineraries will be announced as they are finalized with our regional partners. In November 2021, Sea Women Expeditions returns to Norway's arctic fjords. We’ll run a women's leadership program in Tromsø, Norway, followed by an ocean research and winter snorkel (with orcas!) expedition some 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Our 16-passenger expedition vessel is the Swedish-flagged MV Freya and our snorkel tour operator is Netherlands-based Waterproof Cruises & Expeditions, a woman-owned company that specializes in polar dive & snorkel tours. Thirty-two sea women will participate in two back-to-back women's leadership programs and ocean research and winter snorkel expeditions to Norway in November 2021. Our Indigenous and non-Indigenous team members come from Canada, the United States and across Europe, and include First Nations and Inuit women from Canada, and Sami women from Norway and Sweden. If you're interested in joining Sea Women Expeditions in Norway's arctic fjords in November 2021 and November 2022, please send your biography and resume to: [email protected]
