McConnell River (Kuugaarjuk) Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The McConnell River Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located along the west coast of Hudson Bay near the community of Arviat in the Kivalliq region. This (32,800 hectare) bird sanctuary is named for the McConnell River, which flows into Hudson Bay. The sanctuary protects important breeding grounds for lesser snow geese, Ross’s geese and Canada geese. Established in 1960 under the Migratory Bird Sanctuary Regulations of the Migratory Birds Convention Act of 1917, this sanctuary is owned by the Inuit of Nunavut.
